Rob Wakeman is Provost's Postdoctoral Scholar at the University of South Florida. His research examines the relationship between late medieval and early modern English literature and the food cultures of England. He is now at work on a book that considers the parallel evolutions of theatrical production and meat production in sixteenth-century England, taking up scenes of animal agriculture in Shakespeare, Jonson, the Towneley Manuscript, and the Chester Cycle. As it reckoned with sixteenth-century animals as both creaturely life and as commodities, this book proposes that theater increasingly became the site where the living relationships and social values of the English foodshed were not only depicted but also contested.

Rob teaches classes on medieval and early modern literature, Shakespeare, and the history of drama. He is pleased to meet with USF students interested in ecocriticism, animal studies, food studies, and medieval and early modern literature.
